All seven founding members received 10 senators, while all 6 remaining states would each receive 1 single seat - for a senate of 76 members. 39 senators would reach a majority, the requirement to pass a bill. For a majority, the winning party needed 39 senators.
The United Party won 27 senators, a decrease of 14 from 2310, and putting them in second place for the first time ever. The People Party rose to first place, gaining 4 senators to a total of 31 senators. The National Party came third again with 15 senators, up almost double by 7 senators. The Separatist Bloc won 3 senators after previously winning zero. The Conservative Party and the Progressive Party won no senators again. The United Party re-established its coalition with the People Party, to get a combined 58 senators, a majority of 40.
