The Kingdom of Grensalbourg (Te land of Te union of palakinen and emferias), commonly known as Grensalbourg, is a country in the Ewynnia region of south east Alaxia. The official language is Exteras, although a sizable chunk speak either Empheri or Palak. The country's population is approximately 5.2 million. The country hosts the breakaway states of the Grensal Republic (2490–2491) and the Free Palak Republic of Mijguer (since 2513).

History[edit | edit source]

The country was established during the Treaty of Grensalbourg in 2428. Previously, all land belonging to Grensalbourg belonged to Palakkinen but the land was barren and empty. The treaty stipulated that a new city would be built there to act as a trade hub between Empherias and Palakkinen. As such, the nation is split between mostly Empheri and Palakkine citizens, with a few native Grensalbourgish peoples, and some immigrants from other nations such as Hvede and Ahitereira.

Initially, the constitution had the state run in a diarchy. One representative was chosen by the Empheri government, and one by the Palakkine government, and they would run equally and jointly.

Following the admittance of Empherias into the High Kingdoms of Alaxia in 2448, it was clear that this situation was untenable. An elected representative from the High Kingdoms would hold way more weight in government than a Palakkine one and furthermore, the monarchs of Empherias had made clear intentions that they did not want to rule Empherias as their third most powerful monarchy, and so gave up the throne. It was agreed throughout 2449 constitutional reforms that the Empheri representative would shift into a permanent position held by the former monarch of Empherias as Rijkse or Rijkdottir of Grensalbourg. Reforms also transformed the Palakkine representative into an elected office appointed by the monarch on the potential to gain confidence in the Parliament. This essentially transformed Grensalbourg into a constitutional monarchical parliamentary democracy, rather than the appointed and un-elected state it was previously.

Modern history[edit | edit source]

Upon the death of Rijkdottir Roxanne I in 2489, the thrones of the Hveden Federation and Grensalbourg fused, uniting them in a personal union.

Politics[edit | edit source]

The first general election took place in 2449, with new legislative sessions taking place every three years. Elections elect 100 seats to the Parliament of Grensalbourg using proportional representation. Following the general election outcome, the leader of the party with the most seats would automatically become the prime minister. In situations where this party controls a minority of seats, the parliament can force a vote after a week for a vote of no confidence in the government and for a forced vote on a new prime minister. This allows coalitions to appoint their preferred candidate as prime minister. If a no confidence vote succeeds, the incumbent prime minister stays on as a caretaker until the new prime minister is chosen in a new vote. However, if a new prime minister is not voted on within three weeks with a majority, the monarch will dissolve parliament and call new elections.

In situations when after the outcome of an election that the automatic prime minister is ambiguous and a vote can't occur (for example, multiple parties tie for first place in number of seats), then the previous prime minister will continue as caretaker for a maximum of three months to allow for a vote to be held, in which the regular procedures surround that will be followed. This means that, in the event of an ambiguous prime minister, the previous will continue as caretaker until a vote to appoint a new one is called. At this point after the first vote occurs, the three week countdown will begin. The monarch reserves its right to also appoint an emergency prime minister in situations where they believe the current prime minister does not command the confidence of the house, or after the government loses a vote of confidence before it appoints a new prime minister. These monarchical appointed prime ministers cannot stay in office without confirmation for more than six months though.

The current Prime Minister is Viktoria Murphy, elected in 2519. The current ruling party, the Labour party, has been in power since 2506.
