The incumbent president Zhang did not run for re-election in the 2500 presidential election. This widened the race for the presidency significantly, and also opened up the race in the Canton Representatives and Senatorial Deputies elections. The possibility of the election to shake up Sutonese politics was very aware in the minds of the public with the media quoting it as 'possibility the largest shift in 25 years'. While the field of candidates was still mostly moderate, many were worried that without a stable leading authority figure, parties could easily shift left or right. |
