A country's ranking on the index is judged through a series of fifty matters, of which measure political freedoms, plurality in governance, equality in liberties amongst other matters. An average is sorted upon the judging of all fifty cases, with a low score indicating a low level of democratic integrity, and a high suggesting the contrary. Depending on the average, the nation is slotted into one of five categories: full democracies, flawed democracies, hybrid regimes, autocratic regimes, or totalitarian regimes.
