The 2440 Empherias general election was held on 24 September 2440 to elect 600 members to the Empherias parliament. The incumbent Liberal party won 253 seats, a plurality, but was now 48 seats short of an overall majority. This was the first time since 2414 that no single party won a majority of seats. The Liberals had a swing of –9 percentage points, losing 1.4 million voters to receive just 12 million total. The largest opposition party, the Socialists, won 244 seats – an increase of 12 seats and a swing of only +1.6. This was not an electorate that was particularly enthusiastic about the PSP despite the failures of the Liberal party. Three other parties reached over a million voters this election: the Nationalists with 35 seats (up 14), the Greens with 27 seats (up 20), and the Centre party with 21 seats (up 5). The Green party in particular had the largest swing towards it of +3.3.

A hung parliament saw a lot of chaos following the election. Skylar Lawrence continued on as a 'caretaker' prime minister until a vote of confidence could be held. A vote of confidence was held in the government on 26 September 2440, which the government won narrowly 302–297. The BVP supported the government due to fears of a wipe-out in another election, while the Nationalists and Conservatives reached a proper deal with the government for some concessions. The main concession was for an earlier election than the scheduled one for September 2445, which many believed would be held in May 2443 or earlier.

The Leader of the Socialists Millie Stewart would resign following the disappointing results on 9 November 2440. Her replacement was Katelyn Roberts.
