The West Alaxian War was a military conflict taking place within the West Alaxian region, between a coalition consisting of primarily Ceironia, Fazar, and Jimaria; and the West Alaxian United Front (WAUF) of Ginsukyo, Thraxia, and Atlantia.

Fighting began when Ginsukyo declared war on Fazar, initiating an invasion of the Fazarian exclave of Tuzal. This was followed shortly by a Ceironian declaration on Thrax and the WAUF on December the 22nd, which they allege was prompted by a Thraxian assault on their forces. The Thraxian government at the time maintained Ceironian forces attacked first. The Ceironian declaration was accompanied by a cyber warfare attack of unprecedented scale, knocking out telecommunications and damaging infrastructure across the WAUF.

The Jimarian declaration came a few days later in January, followed shortly by a Hvede missile strike against Ginsukyo. While initial Ceironian and Jimarian offensives were highly successful, Jimarian forces would become bogged down in a prolonged Siege of the Ginsukyoan city of Makise, the longest and deadliest engagement of the war.

The August 2522 Atlantian Air raids against Fazar, followed by the Thraxian bombing of the Ozge Stadium in Kessel, would draw Jimaria and Fazar into formal war with Thrax and Atlantia.

In July 2524, Atlantia, the last WAUF holdout, would surrender unconditionally, marking a formal end to the war. All former WAUF states were divided into occupation zones, between Ceironia, Fazar, Jimaria, and Sinkajja.

Background and Buildup

Aftermath of the 2479 War

The strategic Thraxian defeat in the 2479 war left much of the nation with a sense of resentment against their invaders, especially against Fazar, due to the Fazarian bombing campaign being responsible for the majority of the civilian deaths and economic damages. Thraxian-Democratic Mid Sea Organization (DMSO) relations remained especially tense, though Thraxian-Ceironian relations would see more shifting over time.

Rising Tensions

The 2507 Winter Storm, and ensuing recession, would mark the beginning of a serious rise in tensions, though issues would flare up from time to time before then. The Ceironian government was overthrown in a popular coup, and the global economic issues saw a general global increase in distrust between nations.

In April, 2514, Sinkajja would propose a defensive pact to Atlantia, Thrax, and Ginsukyo, which would become known as the West Alaxian United Front (WAUF), intended as a "temporary deterrent from foreign intervention within [the] region", largely in response to the encrouchment of Ceironia and the gains of Ceironian/ODA aligned Ruskvi in the ongoing Ciyugan Civil War. The WAUF would de facto replace the previous Confederation of Allied Nations (CAN), an alliance of Karkuss, Hvede, Lunidor, Thrax, Ginsukyo, and Atlantia, created in December of 2500 to oppose the influence of the Great Powers of Suton, Fazar, and Ceironia.

However the November 14th, 2514 bombing in the Fazarian capital of Kessel would see a real escalation. While the bombing was tied directly to the terrorist organization known as the "Skaven Liberation Army" (SLA), many within Fazar speculated Ladrosian or Thraxian government involvement, either through funding the terrorists, or using them as cover for a government operation. The bombing would force Fazarian Prime Minister Salgado to temporarily step down, his successor Prime Minister Hajar would agree to a summit with Thraxian delegates on the island of Pelegros, with the Thraxians hoping to "Liberalize" relations. The talks fell through, with no real progress made in improving overall Thraxian-Fazarian relations.

Tensions would remain high, as DMSO nations, particularly Jimaria and Fazar, sought to modernize and expand their military forces with newer and better equipment, in the event of war.

In May 2519, the Thraxian government would invite Lunidor to a summit in the city of Osterkkon, to discuss the threat of Fazar. The Thraxian Delegation focused on exaggerated statistics for the damage caused by Fazarian bombings during the Thraxian conflict, as well as reports from their military intelligence that Fazar was planning an invasion of Thrax in 2520. The Thraxian delegation attempted to persuade Lunidor to station military forces in Thrax, but Lunidor refused to commit.

In May of 2520, "due to diplomatic, strategic and national security reasons", the Sinkajan government withdrew from the WAUF and petitioned to join the DMSO, as war between the two alliances seemed increasingly inevitable.

In June of 2520, Jimarian President Lioth Sslath ordered the deployment of military units to the Thraxian and Ginsukyoan borders, fearing the WAUF rhetoric claiming a planned Fazarian Genocide was a ruse to justify a preemptive strike. While at the time the move was very controversial domestically, including among Sslath's own party, and is credited as one of the reasons he would lose the election a month later, the president is widely considered to have been proven correct in the end.

In July of 2520, the Thraxian government sent a desperate plea to the ODA, namely Ceironia, Ruskvi, Lunidor, and Nordleg. Declassified it reads as follows: "To the ODA members: An foreign enemy of the WAUF-ODA is going to start the invasion soon, we need as much volunteer support as possible as the window is running out and the failure to defend WAUF will result in millions of deaths by the enemy in regards to warcrimes, mass graves, forced labor camps, etc. We are losing. Please send the divisions as soon as possible. Thank you". Only the Ceironian government sent direct forces, the entire 1st Field Army of 10 Infantry Divisions, an additional 5 Mechanized Divisions, 20 Airforce Wings, and 10 Naval Groups. Lunidor offered material aid, though no other ODA member responded to the request.

In April of 2521, Ginsukyo would order mandatory conscription to begin in July, in preparation for the war. This would prompt Jimaria to raise three new Reserve Army Corps for defense in June, and withdraw the Jimarian forces which had long been stationed on military bases in the Cralas Corporate Republic back home. Tensions continued to ride high until finally, in December of 2521, Ginsukyoan soldiers crossed the border into Tuzal, an exclave long held by Fazar.

History

2521

On December 7th, 2521, a Ginsukyoan force crossed the border into Fazarian Tuzal, engaging the local defenders. The Ginsukyoan forces numbered over 365,000 infantry, supported by thousands of armored vehicles, hundreds of artillery pieces, and over two hundred and sixty aircraft. The Fazarian defenders numbered 500,000 better trained and equipped ground infantry, supported by thousands of aircraft and tens of thousands of armored vehicles. While the invaders fought valiantly, and had superior artillery, they were nonetheless driven back to the border.

Ceironian (Red) Occupation of Thrax (Blue) by the end of 2521

Days later, on December 22nd, Thraxian forces conducted a suspected attempt to seize superior Ceironian equipment for use in the war, which would rapidly escalate into open warfare across Thrax. This fighting was supported by "Operation Spros", the largest cyber warfare attack in history. Within minutes across the WAUF, rail was disrupted, pipelines shut down, power grids overloaded, telecommunications jammed, satellites overheated, and digital banks hacked. While on paper the Thraxian airforce appeared even to the Ceironian aircraft deployed in the region, it was none the less beaten allowing Ceironian ground forces contested air support. With the exception of submarines, the Thraxian navy was quickly destroyed by far superior Ceironian forces. Vastly superior trained and equipped Ceironian ground forces managed to quickly overwhelm the far numerically superior Thraxian ground forces. Ceironian forces rapidly seized central Thrax, as the Thraxian Army (Thraxianische Heer) took massive casualties, losing over 112,000 men by the end of the month, though managing to hold onto the capital of New Dinsmark.

2522

In January, to support their Fazarian allies in the DMSO, over 140,000 Jimarian troops commanded by Marshal Khazdor poured over the border into Ginsukyo, engaging 170,000 defenders. The defenders would fight valiantly, but would be pushed back to a defensive position between the city of Tsiwa in the North and the larger city of Makise in the South. The advance would halt for two months in order to secure supply lines and occupation of the territory, in preparation for an attack on Makise. At this point, with Thrax and Ginsukyo rapidly losing territory, coalition forces expected a quick victory within a few months. Hvede, in a bid to distance themselves from the WAUF, would launch a limited missile strike against Ginsukyoan naval assets.

In March, Jimarian air forces had narrowly secured air superiority above Makise, and ground forces prepared to invade. However, Ginsukyoan forces had managed to fortify the city on the ground. Some 206,000 Ginsukyoan defenders held out against over 179,000 Jimarian attackers, granting the WAUF their first victory in the war. The defeat would prompt the Jimarian parliament to require all citizens aged 22-24 to sign up for the draft the following month, though the draftees would not yet be called upon. In June, Jimarian forces numbering over 170,000 would assault the reinforced 218,000 Ginsukyoan defenders in the second battle of Makise. Jimarian forces solidified air superiority, but the ground assault was once again a failure. This second failure prompts Jimaria to call up 80,000 conscripts to aid in the war effort.

August would see a poorly planned Atlantian air raid against the Fazarian islands to their North. Just 50 Atlantian bombers would meet resistance from over 800 Fazarian aircraft, being quickly overwhelmed and shot down. Only 2 Fazarian casualties are reported. This air raid would be shortly followed by the Ozge Stadium bombing, linked to the "Thraxian Liberation Army", a paramilitary group with ties to the Thraxian state. As the bombing was in the middle of a game, tens of thousands of Fazarian civilians would die, prompting prime minister Salgado to declare war. Jimaria would quickly issue formal declarations against both Atlantia and Thraxia. Along with this, Thraxian Partisans and Insurgents began to harass Ceironian supplies, placing mines and other explosives on roads and bridges, among other tactics.

Coalition advances (Red) into WAUF states (Blue) by the end of 2522

On September 7th, Ceironian and Jimarian forces would launch a joint "Operation Okeanos" against remaining Thraxian holdouts. While the remains of the Thraxian airforce were able to put up an impressive resistance in the skies, ground forces would continue to be battered, Thrax taking over a hundred thousand further casualties to just a few thousand between Ceironia and Jimaria. Thraxian forces would be further pushed back toward their largest cities. Poseidon would be accompanied by a third assault on Makise, and while Ginsukyoan airforces were decimated, losing dozens of planes to only a single confirmed Jimarian loss, ground forces continued to hold out. Ginsukyo maintained slight ground numerical superiority, though were as unable to break out of the city and retake loss territory as Jimarians were unable to capture Makise.

In October, Atlantian ground forces would begin moving to Makise, as Ginsukyo began to prepare a fallback line if the city fell.

2523

In February, Jimarian forces launched a fourth assault on Makise, engaging the Ginsukyoan and Atlantian forces present there. Jimarian air power remained utterly dominant, without a single airplane lost, to some 48 Ginsukyoan planes. Despite this control of the skies, the defenders continued to hold on the ground, with outgunned Ginsukyoan artillery managing to suppress the Jimarian guns.

In March, the Ceironian government would begin planning a large investment fund to rebuild the nations damaged in the war, shortly before Jimaria began mobilization on an unprecedented scale, with Marshal Khazdor vowing to either take the city by September or resign in disgrace. Over 50,000 infantry, 4,000 artillery pieces, and 1,800 armored vehicles are deployed to reinforce the front.

In May Thrax Surrenders Unconditionally to the Coalition forces.

Coalition advances (Red) into WAUF states (Blue) by the end of 2523

Early June would see the next Jimarian assault on Makise, supported by continued overwhelming Jimarian air superiority, and now superior artillery support. The defenders managed to hold out, but the Jimarian forces regrouped, and within a week launched another attack. Makise finally fell to the Jimarian army, after holding out for fifteen months. With the city finally taken and Thrax surrendered, Ceironia launched a large scale missile strike against the Ginsukyoan navy.

In September, the Ceironian and Jimarian forces engaged in the joint "Operation Atradi", pushing far west of Makise and encircling the city of Tswia with over 150,000 Ginsukyoan soldiers inside.

In December, a force of Ceironian Paramarines outnumbered over 2-1 take the Ginsukyoan capital of Eientai from the sea, leaving the Ginsukyoan Army threatened from both the East and West.

2524

After securing the occupied territory, Ceironian forces would launch attacks from Eientai in May, securing further territory. This would prompt Ginsukyo to surrender unconditionally to Jimaria a few weeks later in June. A meeting between Ceironian, Fazarian, Jimarian, and Sinkajan leaders would be held. Thrax would be formally divided into three occupation zones, to Jimaria, Fazar, and Ceironia. Ginsukyo would be divided into four zones, with Sinkajan forces taking some territory along their border with Ginsukyo.

In July Atlantia would issue it's unconditional surrender, as a joint Fazarian-Ceironian offensive was being planned to rapidly occupy the country. Like the other WAUF states, Atlantia is divided into occupation zones, this time between Fazar, Ceironia, and Sinkaja. Atlantia's surrender would mark the formal end of the war.

Aftermath

Post-War Relations

Within 11 months of the war's end, in June 2525, Sinkaja formally joined the DMSO. The creation of the independent Ceironian-backed Union States in former Atlantia, Ginsukyo, and Thrax, would also see a sort of souring of relations between Ceironia and the DMSO.

Union States

In August 2524, within a month of the war's end, Ceironia would establish Union governments modelled on the Ceironian government in Atlantia, Ginsukyo, and North/South Geclaria.

In February 2526, the Atlantian Union would be the first to hold elections, with five major parties emerging. Two additional movements would gain a lot of traction, but be barred from formally running due to being labelled "extremist". These movements being the Atlantian Socialists and Ultranationalists, both advocating the end of Capitalist Ceironian-Style Rule.

In April 2526, the Ginsukyoan Union would hold its elections, in which General Elin Paya would win the presidency uncontested, having run unopposed. The Senate and House would see more varied results, with seven parties winning some number of seats. The Ginsukyoan Union would also see the largest Anti-Ceironian movement, formed under a man going by "Etchler Furida", suspected to be a pseudonym of Nationalist General Kimishi Shizodo. The Furida movement makes heavy use of internet bots and other propaganda to speak against the Union government.

The North/South Geclarian governments have not yet held elections as of January 2527.

The Union States are widely viewed as little more than puppet governments under the Ceironian Union.

Jimarian Occupied Regions

Since the end of the War, the eastern parts of Ginsukyo and Thrax have remained under Jimarian Military Occupation. While initially a quick reunification was considered, the creation of the Union governments quickly put an end to those thoughts. The Ginsukyoan Occupation Zone was put under command of Marshal Khazdor, Commander of Jimarian Army Group North, while Marshal Arvekh of Army Group South oversees the Thraxian Occupation Zone. Both Occupation Zones operate under Jimarian Law plus several additional orders heavily restricting firearms possession and manufacturing, freedom of movement across the Occupation Zone borders, and rationing food and water while necessary infrastructure undergoes repairs. In September of 2525, the Jimarian government approved incentives for Jimarian companies to handle the rebuilding effort, hiring local workers with a priority given to infrastructure repair. A memorial for all who died in the siege of Makise is also commissioned as apart of the rebuilding of the city.

The Jimarian Government continues to detain a large number of prisoners of war, though there are talks to release all not guilty of additional crimes by the year 2530 at the latest.

Fazarian Occupied Regions

See also: Fazarian Occupied Thrax, Fazarian Occupied Ginsukyo, and Fazarian Occupied Atlantia

As Fazar was the victim of attacks by Ginsukyo, Atlantia, and Thrax the Fazarian military would be left to the occupation of the Ginsukyoan Capital of Eintai and it's surrounding area; the Thraxian Capital of New Dinsmark, along with the cities of Österkon, Techen, Everport, Alsbruck, and their surrounding areas; and the North of Atlantia, up until their former capital of Mediterra. All three regions remain under military occupation.

Sinkajan Annexations

In December 2525, the areas under Sinkajan occupation would be directly annexed into the Sinkayyan Councilist Socialist Republic. A clause is included that, with 80% public approval and 66% government approval, the formerly Ginsukyoan region may be allowed to reunite with Ginsukyo, should the rest of the country at any point reunify.

In January of 2526, minor protests and skirmishes between the Sinkayyan Army and Ginsukyan Nationalist insurgents were noted. They would mostly by put down by the next month following both their bombardment across the border in Jimaria and due to lack of public support. A public university would be built shortly after in the region's capital of Tawakyuu.

Public Opinion on the War

While there were calls against the fighting from day one, it was not until March 2523 that the Anti-War movement within especially Ceironia and Jimaria would begin picking up real steam. Large scale protests and demonstrations would break out. In Ceironia these protests mostly stemmed from a moral opposition, and questions about the governments motives for deploying to Thrax at all.

In Jimaria, while there were some who opposed the war on moral grounds, the largest opposition came from the anti-draft movement. The Jimarian government had only conscripted soldiers once before, from 2411 - 2424 to serve in the Jimarian Expeditionary Forces alongside the Fazarian Army in The Great War. In addition to the almost century long tradition of a volunteer army, the punishment for draft dodging was set at a fine, which caused many in the lower classes to say the system had been made so that the rich could simply pay not to fight.

By December of 2523, the protest movements would reach their general peak, the Jimarian anti-war movement having grown significantly in size due to the heavy casualties suffered to take just a single city, and arguments that Fazar was not contributing enough to what many saw as their fight. Protests in Ceironia expanded in response to deployment in Ginsukyo, as many had hoped the surrender of Thrax would have brought an end to Ceironian involvement. Protests within Ginsukyo also began to emerge, as many across the nation saw the steep toll of defense as too high a price to pay. However, as 2524 came along and intensity of the fighting died down before coming to an end, so too did the protests lose much of their steam.

Thraxian Government Claim of Events

Before their occupation and dissolution, the Thraxian government maintained that Ceironian forces attacked theirs first, and that they had nothing to do with the Ozge Stadium Bombing. Obviously, these claims are disputed by the coalition nations, who maintain the Thraxian government launched the attacks in support of their Ginsukyoan and Atlantian allies.

Many within Thrax continue to hold these views, or otherwise maintain that Thrax "should" have won, even years after the war.

  1. This figure only includes ground forces participating in the war
  2. Fazarian civilian casualties include the Ozge Stadium Bombing, which the Thraxian government denied involvement in.
  3. Estimates include only deaths directly tied to the war. Does not include excess deaths due to increased lawlessness, poorer healthcare, etc. Accounting these factors adds up to 570,000 additional civilian casualties across all nations, by some estimates.
